Job Summary
If you are not an engineer, cannot code, and are unable to motivate the organisation on the benefits of cloud, this role is not for you.
The Head of Cloud Operations is responsible for overseeing the management, performance and reliability of cloud infrastructure across the organization. The role ensures the efficient operation of cloud services, driving automation, cost optimisation, and scalability. The role leads incident response, ensures security and compliance and collaborates with cross-functional teams to support business objects.
This role has the responsibility of keeping platform healthy meeting all risk appetite indicators, ensuring services run to SLAs and to ensure continual commercial and risk benefits are availed for the organisation.
The role also oversees all the changes in the cloud environments, monitoring the cloud estate, ensuring consistent cloud service delivery while driving continuous improvements in cloud processes and performance.
Strategy
• Measure value realization goals are aligned to strategy such as operational costs, business growth etc.
• Own, maintain and manage the exit management and contingency plans for cloud platform
• Contribute to cloud strategy by aligning operational process with business goals, ensuring scalability, reliability, and cost-efficiency in cloud services
Business
• Anticipates what clients want and delights them with continual value and service assurance knowing, more than anything, cloud services must be continually available and secure
• Keep the cloud platform and cloud services continually operating to agreed service levels
• Respond in a timely manner to incidents to recover services asap
• Implement and maintain robust monitoring and observability to ensure real time visibility, performance tracking and issue detection across cloud environments
• Ensure all changes on the environments are done in a safe manner
• Reduce toil and automate solutions to reduce risk and prevent manual solutions
• Optimize cloud resource utilization and implement cost management strategies to ensure efficient spending and alignment with budgetary goals
• Ensure cloud infrastructure and services are continuously updated to prevent obsolescence, maintaining compatibility, security, and optimal performance
• Forge trusted partnerships with internal control and governance teams to drive confidence in the cloud platform and its services
• Ensure operational effectiveness of controls across technology and cyber on the cloud environment
• Lead regular service review meetings with cloud service providers to assess performance, address issues, and ensure SLA’s are met
• Facilitate blameless postmortems to analyse incidents, identify root causes, and implement improvements without assigning fault, fostering a culture of learning and accountability

Processes
• Work with Technology Governance to issue appropriate policies, procedures and quality checks for operating and servicing cloud workloads across the bank
• Ensure the cloud platform is aligned with service management and change management process for the bank
• Have awareness of and understand the relevant regulation for the markets in which the bank operates such as sovereignty and resilience.
• Ensure compliance with Standard Chartered governance frameworks and challenge them where appropriate.
• Support regulatory audits, direct audits and RFI’s on cloud environments
People & Talent
• The leader is an engineer at heart and keeps a lean, motivated and highly skilled team of cloud engineers that together are obsessed with customer (internal or external) needs
• The team believes and advocates efficiency as a continuous engineering challenge not a commercial ambition
• When cloud services are at risk or worse fail, this team is personally affected and takes whatever means necessary to restore confidence in services
• Drives a deep sense of entrepreneurialism into the team to endlessly pursue opportunities with the cloud for the bank
• The team of talented engineers has it drilled into them that their success also pivots on the ability for other engineers to deploy workloads on the cloud platform easily and seamlessly
• Be an inspiration to other engineers attracting and developing new talent to the organisation and managing poor performers
• Keep a list of practical yet challenging objectives and measures for the team and individuals to target
Risk Management
• Drive for the closure of risks, operational events and audit findings on time, once and done
• Educate the team on risk management and continual mitigating of risk
• Comply with organisation risk management framework
• Find automated solutions to reduce risk and prevent human and manual solutions
Skills and Experience
Governance
• Ensure the value determination & realizations for workload migrations to cloud
• Ensure compliance with all applicable SC governance frameworks
• Adhere to and optimise cloud governance frameworks and processes
• Stay aware of changing regulatory landscape so that we can proactively manage the emerging requirements for workloads
• Ensure compliance with the highest standards of regulatory and business conduct and compliance practices as defined by internal and external requirements. This includes compliance with local banking laws and anti-money laundering regulations and guidelines
Regulatory & Business Conduct

• Responsibility for adherence to the Mandatory Conduct Requirements and demonstrating positive risk, control and Conduct behaviours as part of their role. Examples include:
- Timely escalation and proactive management and mitigation of risks and issues.
- Sharing lessons learnt with colleagues to prevent future errors.
- Raising concerns and dealing with mistakes in a timely manner and encouraging others to speak up.
- Cooperating fully with requests from regulators and Group Internal Audit.
- Promoting an inclusive culture, encouraging colleagues to act ethically, learn from mistakes, and set the right example to their teams.
- Responsibility to conduct and complete the Mandatory Conduct Affirmation (MCA) annually, as part of the year- end review to affirm the following:
- Risk & control and Conduct behaviours have been considered and assessed as part of continuous performance management.
- Colleagues approach to risk, control and Conduct was considered when making Total Variable Compensation (TVC) proposals during year-end review.
